Funny how you'll hold up science as vindication when it confirms your biases -- in this case, against sunscreen -- but dismiss it when it contradicts them -- ahem, climate change.

Now that's intellectual rigor we can believe in!

@Sue: The sunburn standard seems to cover things, i.e., if you have very fair skin and burn in ten minutes at noon, then, well, you should avoid doing that obviously. And of-course avoid heatstroke. Everybody's different. The thing is to not view the sun as being just inherently bad, as we've been trained to do.

Well, as for the question of why God (if you believe) or Mother Nature (if you don't) made us the way we are we shouldn't forget that most of us aren't in the places we're meant to be. Those of us with a dermis that is pale and thin started in places with less sun, those with a dark and thicker dermis from areas blasted by the sun. But that's all another story. Basically I agree. We have a world authority on Vitamin D deficiency here in Adelaide and he's been trying to get people to ease off on the sunscreen for years. His big concern though is bone loss and the damage being done to people stuck in retirement homes getting no exercise and no sun. Of course in Australia we are one of those areas blasted by the sun but it has gotten to ridiculous degrees at times. For instance, schoolchildren aren't permitted to go into the playground at recess if they don't have their sunhats. Okay when it's over 30C but I think on mild days it's a bit much.
